Nahw 1 — Al-Ajrumiyyah
الآجرومية
Al-Ajrumiyyah is the classical grammar primer generations of students have begun nahw with. Over the term you'll work through the parts of speech, i'rab, and the rules governing the structure of every Arabic sentence by learning the terminology in Arabic as the tradition transmits it. This is the course that turns the grammar you've been using into grammar you can explain: why a word carries the ending it does, and what changes when the sentence changes around it.
Who it's for: Students who have completed Book 1 or are currently enrolled in Level 3.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
Identify the parts of speech and the signs that distinguish them
Explain i'rab: raf', nasb, jarr and jazm, and what governs each
Break down a sentence and account for the ending on every word
Recognize the nominal and verbal sentence and their components
Use classical grammatical terminology in Arabic
Apply Al-Ajrumiyyah's rules to unfamiliar texts, including the Qur'an
The course is taught text-in-hand, with steady application to real Arabic rather than isolated examples.
